Defeated by the Baconator
Monday, 28 April 2008 by Benedict Seraphim
In celebration of Bright Monday, I purchased a BaconatorTM sandwich meal from Wendy’s for lunch. I ate all the fries, but only made it through about three-fourths of the two-patty, bacon-draped sandwich.
I guess I did lose forty pounds over the last few months.
Oh, well.

Brave man…that’s like wrestling Hulk Hogan after sitting in an easy chair for 8 weeks.
*Forty pounds*?
That wasn’t very nice of whoever played that practical joke on you. You *are* allowed to *eat* during the fast. You’re just not supposed to eat meat, dairy, and some other stuff.
Yes, forty pounds.
But, I did say “few months.” I began to discipline my food intake immediately after my annual physical on 4 January. While for reasons other than the Fast, my food intake was significantly reduced, I did eat enough to feel satiated and did not experience any undue hunger cravings.
And, without going in to detail of course, my fasting regimen is about as minimal as it can get. Apparently my priest knows I have this pride issue.
Since I’m posting semi-anonymously, I’ll take time here to say that I fasted (almost) for-real for the first time, and I lost twenty pounds. (Not that my fast was entirely successful on a spiritual level, mind you.)
Anyway, so I decided that Holy Week would be a great time to get my forty-year physical: I went in and had blood work done. Suffice it to say that what I had known all along was now medically affirmed: my cholesterol is too high. By about 100 points. After fasting from meat and cheese for six weeks. Yikes.
So, now I’ve been put on a permanent fast, of sorts. Oy!
But the good news is this: I gained some terrific self-confidence this Lent, and I’m going to use that confidence to keep losing weight and get in shape.
If the Devil’s in the way, we will role right over him!
And we won’t tag along behind!
I know how you feel. My girlfriend and I went out for pizza tonight. After two slices I felt as if I had eaten the whole pie.

My cholesterol was 280 before Lent began. I had blood drawn on Holy Thursday, I don’t know the results yet. I lost about 18 pounds I needed to this fast (there have been fasts I’ve gained weight due to too much pasta etc.) but it helped a little that my construction work stepped up some too, so I got more physical labor than usual. I’ll be interested to see if Lent made a difference or if I inherited my mother’s bloodstream.
