The Katavasia of Pascha

Ode 1: It is the Day of Resurrection, /
let us be radiant, O ye people; /
Pascha, the Lord’s Pascha: /
for from death to life, /
and from earth to heaven, /
Christ God hath brought us, //
as we sing the song of victory.
Ode 3: Come, let us drink a new drink, /
not one miraculously brought forth from [...]

Christos Voskrese

This is a marvelous Serbian video that I think captures the joy of Pascha.

[Thanks to Fr Stephen where there's a translation of the lyrics.]

Well, although yesterday I was defeated by the BaconatorTM, today I reveled in my victory over the humble sliced turkey and cheddar cheese slice sandwich on wheat. Complete with apple.
Take that!

In celebration of Bright Monday, I purchased a BaconatorTM sandwich meal from Wendy’s for lunch. I ate all the fries, but only made it through about three-fourths of the two-patty, bacon-draped sandwich.
I guess I did lose forty pounds over the last few months.
Oh, well.

From the Dialogues (Bk II Ch I) of Pope St. Gregory the Great:
But Benedict, desiring rather the miseries of the world than the praises of men: rather to be wearied with labor for God’s sake, than to be exalted with transitory commendation: fled privately from his nurse, and went into a desert place called Subiaco, [...]

The Paschal Hymn
Christ is risen from the dead,
trampling down death by death,
and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.
The Paschal Hymn of the Theotokos
The Angel cried aloud to her who was full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Maiden, and again I say, Rejoice; thy Son hath risen the third day from the tomb. Shine, [...]

Great and Holy Thursday

Troparion of Holy Thursday
When Thy glorious disciples were enlightened at the washing of their feet before the supper, then the impious Judas was darkened by the disease of avarice, and to the lawless judges he betrayed Thee, the Righteous Judge. Behold, O lover of money, this man because of avarice hanged himself. Flee from the [...]

Bridegroom Matins

[Note: This post originally posted during Holy Week 2007.]

Unfortunately, my family and I are only able to attend one Bridegroom Matins service this year. I say unfortunately, because this icon personally resonates very deeply with me, tied as it is so closely with Delane’s suffering and death. It was an icon I returned to last [...]

Troparion
O Christ our God, thou didst before thy very Passion confirm the truth of the general Resurrection, by raising Lazarus from the dead. Wherefore we also, like the children bearing the symbols of triumph, cry out unto thee, the vanquisher of death: Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in the [...]

A year or so ago, I came across this link on the Monachos.net website this morning: An Explanation of the Holy Week Services. A very good article. It includes the famous 1998 article of a Norwegian reporter, Niels Christian Hvidt, on the miracle of the Holy Fire. Check it out.
I also came across this meditation [...]

Troparion of St John Tone 3
Thou hast set up a holy ladder by thy words/ and hast shone forth as a teacher of monks;/ thou dost lead us, O John, from the purification that comes from discipline/ to the light of the Divine Vision./ O righteous Father, pray to Christ our God to grant us [...]
